Honeymoon Part 1: Turkey

Lucas and I finally went on our long awaited honeymoon this summer. We spent two weeks traveling through Turkey & Greece. Our first stop was Istanbul, Turkey. We were severely jet-lagged here and just trying to adjust to our new surroundings. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the culture and the people of Turkey.

At the Topkepi Palace overlooking the Bosphorus Strait

The Blue Mosque

Inside of the mosque

No shoes allowed in the mosques!

The Blue Mosque - the most famous mosque

The Rumeli Fortress along the Bosphorus Strait

On our tour we visited a beautiful church which contains the largest collection of mosaics in the world. The church was turned into a mosque for a few hundred years but they did not destroy the mosaics they simply covered them up with fabric (Mosques can't contain any pictures of animals/humans, etc). It has since been re-opened as a museum.

Our tour guide kept saying that in all the mosaics Mary looked "so sad, so sad" because her son died. It was pretty funny because there were a lot of pictures of Mary and he kept saying it over and over again!

A mosaic of Jesus

In front of the church

A Turkish delicacy which is a ring of bread covered in sesame seeds.

The bathrooms were a little small . . . love this pic.

Next up: Athens

looks fun! was the food good in turkey? we have a friend from there and would like to visit sometime. PS i'm very interested to hear how your month without meat goes - post any good recipes you try! Food Inc freaked us out too. Now that we are on two incomes we are switching to all local, organic, meat that we get directly from farms - the commercial stuff FREAKS me out!
